C. Virginia Fields Doubles Back!

C. Virginia Fields is the Borough President for Manhattan.

In a letter of November 22, 2002, Fields opposed the construction of the tower.

Thereafter, her opposition was cited by numerous opponents of the tower in letters.

In a letter dated July 1, 2003, Fields changed her position. This was announced at the hearing by the attorney for the Synagogue. He wanted to read the letter, but Chair Tierney would not permit the letter to be read. Thus, those at the hearing were not aware of the somewhat disingenuous reasoning in the letter.

In the meantime, Fields is the only political leader to support the zoning variances and Landmark's Commission approval

In testimony on November 26, 2002, Alan Singer, Executive President of the Congregation stated:

" In June 2002 at the request of the Manhattan Borough President, C. Virginia Fields, Shearith Israel hosted an evening of Jewish Heritage Commemoration, which was attended by over 200 people and the general public was invited."
